What? A definitive guide to success or the definitive guide to success? If this is the only guide to success that you are coming across, then it is ‘the’. However, I am sure that you have come across a lot more guides and frameworks for helping you achieve success. In which case, it is a definitive guide to success. Or a system and collection of frameworks which you can apply to be successful.
Some background info.
Hi, I am Dr. Maharaja SivaSubramanian N. Blogger, Coach, Consultant, Speaker, Trainer. And also a human being who has had experiences and exposure of my own share of success by working various frameworks (both created by others and designed by me)
And yes, here’s a disclaimer too. This is part of my own experience, education and all the perspectives coming from there. And very much subjective to changes which otherwise I would label as evolution as I evolve. So, take it for that, another perspective and another way of looking at life. If you feel it can be empowering and you are ready to take responsibility for the consequences, then give it a try. And again, absolutely not a substitute for professional help.
Let’s get on with the theme of success then.
Define your success.
Yes, that’s important. Or to paraphrase the way one of my teachers Mr. T Harv Eker will put it across, “most people don’t get what they want because they don’t know what they want’.
I will say it as most people don’t know what they want because they not taken the time and space and put in the effort to know what they want.
You got to know what you want, or as another person from whose work I learned a lot, Mr. Cameron Herold, say it as; you got to have a vivid vision. (And if you are involved in business, you definitely have to read his book “Double Double”).
So define your success in as vivid manner as possible.
A framework for defining it?
Yes, here is one. (I do share a lot more in-depth in my coaching and consulting work and also my group training programs.
According to you, what is success?
What is it you will like to achieve?
With whom and for whom will you like to achieve it?
Why do you want to achieve it?
Have you achieved it before? If yes, do you just want to replicate it or make it better?
How are you planning to achieve it? Do you have a framework?
What will happen if you achieve it?
What needs to happen for you to achieve it?
How will you know you have achieved success?
Which area of life do you want to achieve success? (Physical, mental, emotional, career, wealth, social, environmental, nutritional, spiritual)
So, begin with seeing success as an end goal, a path, a process and define it in all ways for clarity. Clarity gives the certainty that you seek to take forward action.
Where is the gap and how do you fill it?
Once you have set a goal, understand where you are and what is the end you are looking at achieving. Then trace the gap between both. And now it’s time to fill-in the gap.
To achieve it, what resources you already have, and what resources will you need further?
What is the knowledge and know-how you need to acquire?
What is the set of attitude and action steps you have to adapt and execute for the same?
Success is a by-product of habits. So, again what are the list of habits?
Get the right mindset.
Yes, you got to have the right mindset. Because the biggest differentiator between people who are successful and people who are not, can be attributed to the right mindset. It’s not that the so-called unsuccessful people are not successful. A lot many more times, they just fail to acknowledge and recognize their successes. They brush it down as something ordinary and are always looking for something extraordinary. However, the more you are able to pack on the ordinary (and often obvious stuff), with all the extra mass, you end up becoming extraordinary.
Yes, there are some tricks which you can always use. Like self-hypnosis, gratitude exercises, self-love, journalling, meditation, etc. These help a lot.
Break it into bits and milestones.
A journey of thousand steps begins with one step. So, you can have milestones as 1000 steps, or 100 10-steps, or 10 100-steps, or 20 50-steps. Either way, break it into milestones. The milestones should be SMART. (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound)
Get the momentum. And finish it strong.
An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will be in motion unless an external force acts on it. So, begin. Get the momentum, then continue, build the momentum further and then as you near finish, speed up rather than slowing down. Focus on breaking through the finish line. It’s not the finish line that you want, rather the joy, celebration, and achievement once you have made through the finish line. So, go faster towards the end. Finish it strong.
Stay on the path.
Yes, stay on the path. Get the motivation. Did you know that there are two types of motivation? One in extrinsic, as in someone from outside is coming and motivating you and another one is intrinsic, as in you find all the reasons to be motivated and inspired from within. Get them both.
And what about when you face setbacks and failure? Can you still win? Check out this article (winning like a big player) here.
Get some help.
This is a big one. And also a very important one. It helps big time. And that is to get some help. Get a coach, or a consultant, or an accountability partner, or a mastermind, or into a challenge. Something is better than nothing and getting a couple of them works even better. And if done right with proper planning and execution, you can find an aligned framework with all the forms of help which compliment each other.
Prioritize, schedule, produce.
Yes, there’s going to be a lot of things which now will need to be done to get the success you aspire for. Now, the key is to prioritize. Know your priorities well to ensure that which needs to be done, gets done. And then schedule the activities. What gets scheduled has a higher chance of getting done. And finally, produce it. Do the action. Move the needle. Make forward progress,
Reflect and review and reorient.
Yes, reflect and review your progress from time to time. Fix some time for the same. And upgrade your answers. And also, do the necessary corrections to stay on track and also to accelerate your success.
And yes, take care.
As you do it, to have the success you desire, always remember to take care of yourself. A tired horse cannot win the race. A success achieved where you lose yourself cannot be fulfilling. So, also take some time to plan through how you can take care of yourself and feel the fulfillment within as you go through the journey of success.
And what next?
Work through this framework, get the notes, get your answers. Organize and reorganize them and then take action.
