Why are you building a business?
Or more importantly, why are you building your business?
This is one of the questions with which I start discussion with people. And by people, I am referring here to my [coaching and consulting] clients, training workshop participants, friends, colleagues, audience of my talks, etc.
And many a times it is about their passion, profits, profession, contributions to society, etc, etc. And finally there is one theme which all of them have. It is about a certain type of life they want. A dream reality, for themselves, and for others. And in that there are many further details, [some major and some minor].
And then is my next series of follow-up questions.
Why are you building your business?
If it is for a dream life, lifestyle, or creating a new reality, have you taken the time to reflect, plan, organize, and write down the details? And do that at regular intervals?
That’s right. The above question is what I ask, and what is the most important question [according to me]. To get the major and minor details [as much as possible].
Let us look at further more questions, to understand this concept even better.
If you want to travel a lot, which business model will suit you better? Something which you have to work from a place, or something you will like to travel, and be location independent?
If you want to pick and choose who you want to work with, don’t you think it is important to be a huge brand? And also to have more customers, and prospects reaching out to you [many more times than you can handle]?
If you want to focus on very few of the [business related] tasks, then don’t you need a team [either in-house or outsourced] who can handle the other tasks?
If you want to have great profits, which will help you better? Low-priced, medium priced, high-priced, or a mix of all?
If you have limited time for marketing and will like more time freedom, which marketing channel/platform/automation, will help you with the same?
While the above set of questions are more concerned with areas like business model, strategy, branding, marketing, sales, automation, etc, which is what most business owners are looking for answers for, the one important factor which outweighs them all is,
What are you trying to achieve? The final outcome, the dream lifestyle, etc, that you really want. And from there, a lot of work is all about being able to reverse-engineer your business, business model, strategy, departments, hiring, tactics, etc. that would then play the game.
Here are a few more questions which will help you have the clarity.
So, what is your end goal? What type of business will support you in accomplishing the same?
Are small businesses growing? What are the challenges?
